Why Hinging Your Wrists Creates Lag

All golfers desire more distance on their shots, but in their search to have more distance they start to do a large amount of damage to their swing. Some golfers who don’t know any better think that flipping their wrist will generate more clubspeed. “Flipping” is when you move your wrist side-to-side rather than up and back down. If you wear a watch, flipping is when you move your hand away from the face and back towards it.

If you flip your wrist this way, you are going to have very inconsistent impact position. It’s tricky to flip your wrist backwards and forwards the very same way everytime if you’d like to get your club face back to square. Not merely will your swing not be square, but your loft will change also.

The thing you have to do for creating more power is to hinge the club straight up. A real instance of this is if you hold your arm straight out in front of you and cock your wrist so your thumb moves towards your body. Your palms should face the same way in relation to your arms throughout the whole swing.

By cocking your wrists straight up like you are creating some extra power due to “lag.” Lag is troublesome to realise, but it’s fundamentally the ability to keep your hands in front of the ball as you approach impact. Sergio Garcia is one of the best at this if you happen to be looking for a specific player to emulate.

If you cock your wrists straight up like that then you’re creating additional power due to “lag”. Though lag is a tougher to understand concept, it is basically the power to keep your hands in front of the ball as you approach impact.

The clubhead should be much further than the hands so that the gravity and centripetal force will whip the club around faster so that the hands are only barely before the ball at impact. This lag generates heavy club head speed with very little effort.

One drill you can use to learn the correct wrist action is to “pick up the club” right at address. Then you just need to turn your backswing, making a purposeful attempt not to turn your hands right or left, nor move your wrists in your backswing.

You really need to have an intensely relaxed wrist as you start your downswing if you would like your drills to create more lag during as you practice.
